McGee Whiz: 2009 Teen Nationals winner Uriah McGee has big plans for a quick rise to the top

McGee Whiz: 2009 Teen Nationals winner Uriah McGee has big plans for a quick rise to the top

Flex, Dec, 2009 by Shawn Perine

“THERE’S SERGIO … AND MENTZER … THERE’S PAUL DEMAYO … AND MIKE MATARAZZO …”

It’s Dallas, Texas, native Uriah McGee’s first visit to California in general and Gold’s Gym Venice in particular, and as is the case for the countless bodybuilding fans who take their first tour through bodybuilding’s mecca, he is transfixed by the hundreds of photos of legends lining the walls.

“Ferrigno,” he observes. “That’s Charles Glass, from back in the day, oh, and Reg Park …”

The thickly muscled guest continues along one of the photo-lined walls, engrossed in the process of identifying bodybuilding icons, most long-retired, if still alive. He’s no grizzled veteran, though–the guest reciting the names on the wall is 2009 NPC Teen National Championships winner Uriah McGee who, at 19, has only been involved in bodybuilding for three years. Despite his greenhorn status, he has fully immersed himself in the life, studied the history and is already talking about joining the ranks of the honorees hanging from the walls around him.

“The goal is to turn pro by the time I’m 23,” McGee asserts matter-of-factly, moments before the start of the annual photo shoot that FLEX schedules with each new winner of the Teen Nationals Championships.

“That’s an ambitious goal,” I reply.

“Yes, sir, it is,” he agrees. “But guys used to do it more often back in the day. Guys such as Shawn Ray and Rich Gaspari and Lee Priest. Lee Haney, too. I know I have my work cut out for me, but that’s my goal.”

Despite the grandeur of his statement, McGee doesn’t come off as arrogant or braggadocious. In fact, he’s exceedingly polite, always greeting his elders with “sir” and “ma’am,” and when he discusses bodybuilding, it’s with a degree of sober consideration that belies his age.

Nine days prior to the shoot, McGee was crowned middleweight and overall champ at the Teen Nationals, a contest that in past years has been won by Franco Santoriello, Shawn Ray, Shane DiMora, anti aging Branch Warren, Craig Richardson and the like. Yet for all its prestige, the show is no guarantee of future success as an open competitor. In fact, no Teen Nationals overall winner has made it to the pro ranks since Richardson in ‘94. In the 15 years between then and McGee’s win, only 2004 winner Jason Huh has even distinguished himself as a top-level NPC competitor.

“I know,” he asserts when I mention this balloon-bursting fact to him. “I’m not sure why that is, but I plan to be the one who changes it.”

HOOKED Like so many who have preceded him in bodybuilding, McGee discovered the joys of resistance training by way of football

Lapdance club plan is rejected; CITY RESIDENTS SPEAK OUT

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Oct 29, 2009

Byline: AMY HUNT

FEARS that the Toon could turn into a strip club capital have seen plans for a lapdancing bar turned down. ABA Leisure wanted to convert the former Gershwin’s restaurant on Newcastle’s Dean Street into Baby Platinum, a club offering pounds 20 private dances from fully-nude girls.

But operators of other table-dancing venues, along with businesses and residents living near the proposed club, objected, saying it would be the start of a downward spiral.

There are four lap-dancing clubs already in the city with another given a licence and due to open.

Councillors turned down Baby Platinum’s application, saying it would add to nuisance in the area and have a negative impact on public safety.

Speaking at a meeting of the licensing sub-committee, Glenn Nicie, director of For Your Eyes Only Ltd, said: “There’s nothing wrong with competition but this is in the wrong place, the wrong time and is too many.”

Paddy Wuhr, representing the applicant, said evidence that the city was reaching saturation point for lap-dancing clubs was unsubstantiated. He said the applicants, including Philip Whitehouse, a former director of Spearmint Rhino, were experienced in running similar venues in Leeds and Manchester and understood their responsibilities.

But Sarah Smith, representing the For Your Eyes Only group, which also runs Blue Velvet and Diamonds, along with the owners of hammock with stand the Purple Door club due to open on Neville Street and the managers of the Surtees Hotel, said Baby Platinum was looking to “up the ante” in the type of adult entertainment offered in the city.

The application was for nude dancing from 11am to 3.30am on Monday to Saturday and noon to 3.30am on Sundays, with alcohol served until 3am. As well as a topless stage show upstairs, the firm was offering private booths downstairs to regular customers spending around pounds 200 each in a night and a chauffeur service to ferry them home.

Around two dozen people living in the flats at 55 Degrees North, in Newcastle city centre, signed a petition opposing the application, and businesses in the area also objected.

The council’s environmental health department raised concerns about noise from customers and staff leaving the premises
